The kids are missing the pullup bands (as are the adults!) but we really need to just scale the pullup so that we don't rely on these crutches to keep us from our goals. Two great ways to achieve the pullup are: jumping pullups and ring pullups using a lower bar/rings for kids. The jumping pullup uses the concentric muscular motion on the way up or pulling towards yourself and contracting the muscles to reach the top of the bar and the eccentric motion of the pullup is the opening up of the muscles on the way down. Working the pullup everyday is important for muscle memory...got pullups? Work them over and over until you do!

Everyone loves the rope! Many of our kids have mastered this challenging climb using several techniques. Some scale it with bare feet - some with shoes. It is great to see strength building in the kids so that they can reach the top! Then we hear what is music to our ears - the chime of the tiny bell that hangs from the rafter...success!

CrossFit Kids love to perform some whacky stunts! When Taylor S. and his brothers come over to our house, they love to climb this wall. It's pretty awesome to watch - each brother has his own way to scale the wall - they go all the way up to the roofline and jump down from there. Takes some serious leg and core work. Very cool!

Woah dude!

At CrossFit Blacksburg, our kids get to know each other pretty well. Working out two or three days per week together enables kids to form strong friendships and respect for each other outside of school. Respect and good sportmanship are required in the gym and our kids do a great job with both of these standards.

We have seen so many amazing changes take place with all of our students! Several parents have reported that friends and family want to know what their kids have been doing. They have noticed that these kids have leaned out and gained muscle. Even my boys have improved their bodyweight exercises tremendously. At the end of football practice each evening, each player is required to work through a series of pushups and situps in full gear. The boys with the strong cores are able to push through these exercises with no trouble - Ethan and Kyle being among them. Work the core folks!

Our amazingly strong coach, Amy!! Think you can do this?

Our middle school and high school kids have been working on some gymnastics skills this week. No, we are not going to turn any of them into gymnasts but many of these exercises that they are practicing increase core strength and vestibular function. What is vestibular function? The vestibular system, of our inner ear, sends signals primarily to the neural structures that control our eye movements and to the muscles that keep us upright. When we go upside down (for example, in the somersault), this system is activated and strengthened. Everyone should go upside down every now and then!
