More good FAT!

In the early 1900's, there were very few cardiologists in the country, and heart disease was not one of the top ten causes of death.  Since 1950, we have seen a 60 fold increase in cardiologists - and heart disease is the number one cause of death.  You would think with all that attention, we would be getting a handle on coronary disease.  Not to mention all of the effort the pharmaceutical companies are putting in...what gives?  What's changed?  The American Diet, that's what.

In Health Benefits of a Low-Carbohydrate, High Saturated Fat Diet, Donald Miller lays out a succinct well-written piece on how our diet has changed.  And what the consequences have been.  Take a few minutes to read it, and share it with your friends and family.  And in case you were wondering, Donald Miller is a Cardiac Surgeon, and Professor of Surgery at The University of Washington.

Sweat Angels -
While those lovely designs we all leave on the floor after a hard WOD are great to look at, they are also easy to clean up.  The ones we leave on the couches however - not so much!  Yes they feel great to slump into, or to write in your journal, but the moisture tends to linger....So think about those coming in after you, and the parents of our CrossFit Kids - keep the puddles on the floor.   Thanks for your help.

Yes - I am going to pick that up!

    here’s some nerd read:

“Saturated fats play many important biologic roles. They are an integral component of cell membranes, which are 50 percent saturated fat. Lung surfactant is composed entirely, when available, of one particular saturated fat, 16-carbon palmitic acid. Properly made with this fat, it prevents asthma and other breathing disorders. For nourishment, heart muscle cells prefer saturated long-chain palmitic and 18-carbon stearic acid over carbohydrates. Saturated fats are required for bone to assimilate calcium effectively. They help the liver clear out fat and provide protection from the adverse effects of alcohol and medications like acetaminophen. Medium-chain saturated fats in butter and coconut oil, 12-carbon lauric acid and 14-carbon myristic acid, play an important role in the immune system. They stabilize proteins that enable white blood cells to more effectively recognize and destroy invading viruses, bacteria, and fungi, and also fight tumors. Saturated fatty acids function as signaling messengers for hormone production, including insulin. And saturated fats signal satiety. Not surprisingly, given all these biological functions, saturated fats make up 54 percent of the fat in mother’s breast milk (monounsaturated fats are 39 percent; and polyunsaturated fats, a tiny 3 percent).”

  • Did yesterdays wod today at the beach in the sweltering heat. 21:12 as RX. Great bodyweight workout…

Ditto to Jesse’s post above… smile There is a lot of information out there but eating ‘real’ food high in natural fats = good and eating man-made anything = bad. It is so simple and we went and overcomplicated it in the spirit of big business marketing all kinds of laboratory foods to us. It is good to see that there is some momentum in reversing conventional wisdom about diet and health.

Lee and I both have blood panels that show complete reversal of our metabolic derangements after just a few months of eating like this. Go figure…
