Mobility Workshop with Yogadude!
From Bryce...
Being in a bad position sucks. You might feel stuck, off-balance, or maybe even like you're hurting yourself. This counts if you're smashed into an airplane seat that's too small, sleeping on a pullout couch, or impinging your shoulders during an overhead squat. Poor positioning outside of the box means that you might be sore or feel weird for a couple of days. Poor positioning here at CFBB can mean soreness (the bad kind), increasing your risk of injury, as well as killing your performance. Maintaining proper position leads to moving well and moving well leads to moving efficiently, which translates to faster times and heavier weights.
So how do you, as a CrossFitter, start moving better? First, always listen to your coaches. We have all been trained to tell you how to move well. When you're squatting, we don't want you to keep your chest up just to see your pretty face (although that is a nice consolation), we are constantly telling you to keep your chest up so that you're in the right position to move efficiently. Crazy concept I know. “But Bryce! What if I can't stay in that position?” Well, there is no easy answer, no matter how good the instructions are for any particular movement, if there's a flexibility or a motor-control issue and, then, there is work to be done after the WOD. This dilemma is precisely why CrossFit Blacksburg will be putting on its first mobility workshop this Saturday, February 2nd, at 1:00pm. We will be focusing specifically on fixing your overhead position. There will a full 90-minute workshop on getting your shoulders into the right position, using lacrosse balls, foam rollers, bands, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, learning how to stretch correctly, whatever it takes. The workshop is free to all CrossFit Blacksburg members and $20 for the general public. The workshop will take place in lieu of this week's mobility class normally scheduled for Sunday at 4:30.
