CrossFit Games Open 2013
The CrossFit Games ... what is it, and why do I care?
The Games are CrossFit's way of determining the fittest folks on earth. Consider it the Olympics of CrossFit. There has to be a process, right? No one just walked in to a venue in London this past summer and tried to compete (well maybe someone did, but they probably didn't get very far!). There's a qualification process for each sport, and CrossFit has one too.
The road to The Games, held in LA in July, starts off in March at your local affiliate. The Open is a series of five workouts spread out over five weeks, one workout each week. The workouts are announced on Wednesday, and results must be posted by Sunday evening. All workouts are judged, and the results must be verified by the affiliate manager (me!). The top 48 individual men and women, and the top 30 teams, from each region, will move on to Regionals. Regionals is a three day competition in May or June. The top 3 men, women, and teams will move on to The Games in July. The Masters categories start at 40 and are broken up in to five year brackets. There is no Regionals for Masters athletes, as only the top 20 athletes internationally make it to the Games.
At CrossFit Blacksburg, we want as many people to register for the Open as possible. It's a measly $20, and getting your name on the board and seeing how you stack up fires the competitive spirit, and is way worth it! Also, we'd love to be able to field a team to Regionals, and the more people we have registered on our team the better. The top three scores from CrossFit Blacksburg count toward the team standings, regardless of who the top performers are. So if one week the Open WOD is 1RM Back Squat and someone puts up 900lbs, and the next week the workout is Fran, and a different athlete submits a sub-2:00 time, both scores contribute to the Team, regardless of who the athletes are. The more athletes we have with different skill sets register as a member of CrossFit Blacksburg's Team, the better our chances of sending a team to Regionals.
So register ... it's good for you, and it's good for our CrossFit Blacksburg community!

Thanks!! I was just about to post on the forum about this! So will the weekly workout be held at the same time/day every week? And how can you compete if you have to scale the WOD? Don’t you need to be Rx?

Thought I’d share…
Thank you so much!
I’ve seen more results in since joining Crossfit in than with any other program I’ve ever tried, and I have been consistently working out for several years. Previously, training for a half marathon and counting my calories had little effect in helping me lose a little weight, like I hit the proverbial “wall”, but after only two months of Crossfit, I am more tone and feel better than ever. I recently went on a training run for time, and have dropped my pace by nearly 2 minutes per mile. I was never able to achieve such drastic improvement with my previous routine that included intervals, hill repeats, and some weight lifting. With Crossfit, there is always a technique I can improve (I am the poster-child of scaling), and each improvement profoundly enhances my other skills, eliminating the dreaded wall and making it exciting to learn what I will achieve next. Crossfit has changed my outlook on fitness, and introduced me to the way I want to stay healthy, strong, and active in the future.

Can’t wait!!
Lori, you do have to do the workouts Rx for them to “count.” However, I’ve found that to be really good for me in the past, because it forced me to take on challenges I didn’t know whether I could do. Some (heavy squat cleans in 11.3) I could, some (dad-gum muscle-ups) I still haven’t conquered yet. But you do find out a lot about yourself by giving it a shot, even if it’s heavier than you’d normally go in a WOD. As long as you don’t sacrifice form and safety, anyway!

Thanks Daron! I’m going to give it a shot. If nothing else it’ll be fun!
